Complex Sentence
đĩ 1. What is a Complex Sentence?
A complex sentence =
đ 1 independent clause (main idea)
đ + 1 or more dependent clauses (extra information)
Example:
- I will go outside because the weather is nice.
â âI will go outsideâ = complete sentence
â âbecause the weather is niceâ = not complete â depends on main clause
đĩ 2. Types of Dependent Clauses
There are 3 main types you MUST master for IELTS:
đĸ A. Adverb Clauses (Most important)
They answer:
đ why, when, how, condition, contrast
Common words:
- because, although, if, when, while, since, unless, before, after
Examples:
- I stayed home because it was raining. (reason)
- Although I was tired, I studied. (contrast)
- I will call you when I arrive. (time)
- If you work hard, you will succeed. (condition)
đĸ B. Relative Clauses (who, which, that)
Used to give extra information about a noun
Examples:
- The student who studies hard will pass.
- The book that I bought is interesting.
- The city where I live is beautiful.
đ IELTS tip: This increases your grammar score (band 7+)
đĸ C. Noun Clauses
Used as:
đ subject or object in a sentence
Examples:
- I believe that he is honest.
- What she said is true.
- I donât know where he lives.
đĩ 3. Sentence Structure Patterns
You must know these 3 patterns:
â Pattern 1:
đ Dependent clause + , + Independent clause
- Although I was tired, I continued working.
â Pattern 2:
đ Independent clause + dependent clause
- I continued working although I was tired.
â Pattern 3:
đ Embedded clause (inside sentence)
- The man who is talking is my teacher.
đĩ 4. Common Mistakes (Bangladeshi students â ī¸)
â Wrong:
- Because I was tired. (incomplete sentence)
â Correct:
- I stayed home because I was tired.
â Wrong:
- Although he is poor but he is happy.
â Correct:
- Although he is poor, he is happy.
OR - He is poor, but he is happy.
â Wrong:
- He said me that he will come.
â Correct:
- He told me that he would come.

To get high score:
