Lesson: Complex Sentence Structures (জটিল বাক্য গঠন)

1. What is a Complex Sentence?

👉 A complex sentence has one main clause (principal clause) + one or more subordinate clauses (dependent clause).
➡️ বাংলায়: জটিল বাক্যে একটি প্রধান clause থাকে এবং সাথে এক বা একাধিক subordinate (অধীনস্ত) clause থাকে।

Example:

• I stayed at home because it was raining.
  (আমি বাসায় ছিলাম কারণ বৃষ্টি হচ্ছিল।)

2. Structure of Complex Sentences

1. Main Clause + Subordinate Clause
   • She went to bed when the movie ended.
     (সে ঘুমাতে গেল যখন সিনেমা শেষ হলো।)
2. Subordinate Clause + Main Clause
   • When the movie ended, she went to bed.
     (যখন সিনেমা শেষ হলো, তখন সে ঘুমাতে গেল।)

3. Types of Subordinate Clauses

a) Adverbial Clause (কর্ম-উপবাক্য)

• Tells us why, when, where, how.
• Example:
  • He left because he was tired.
    (সে চলে গেল কারণ সে ক্লান্ত ছিল।)

b) Adjective Clause / Relative Clause (বিশেষণ উপবাক্য)

• Describes a noun.
• Example:
  • The man who is wearing a red shirt is my uncle.
    (যে লোকটি লাল শার্ট পরেছে, তিনি আমার কাকা।)

c) Noun Clause (বিশেষ্য উপবাক্য)

• Works as a subject or object.
• Example:
  • I know that he is honest.
    (আমি জানি যে সে সৎ।)

4. Common Connectors in Complex Sentences

• Cause/Reason (কারণ): because, since, as → কারণ, যেহেতু
• Time (সময়): when, while, after, before, until → যখন, যতক্ষণ না, আগে, পরে
• Condition (শর্ত): if, unless, provided that → যদি, যদি না, শর্তসাপেক্ষে
• Contrast (বিপরীত): although, though, even if → যদিও, তবুও

Example:

• She was happy although she was tired.
  (সে খুশি ছিল যদিও সে ক্লান্ত ছিল।)

1. আমি জানি যে তুমি কঠোর পরিশ্রম করছ।
   👉 I know that you are working hard.
2. যদি বৃষ্টি হয়, আমি বাইরে যাব না।
   👉 I will not go out if it rains.
3. সে চলে গেল কারণ তার মাথা ব্যথা করছিল।
   👉 He left because he had a headache.
4. যিনি বই লিখেছেন তিনি একজন শিক্ষক।
   👉 The person who wrote the book is a teacher.
