Lesson: Nominalization (Verb → Noun Transformation)
1. What is Nominalization?
👉 Nominalization means changing a verb, adjective, or clause into a noun or noun phrase.
➡️ বাংলায়: Nominalization হলো ক্রিয়া বা বিশেষণকে বিশেষ্যে রূপান্তর করা।
This is very common in academic writing, reports, formal English.
2. Why Use Nominalization?
- To make writing formal (আনুষ্ঠানিক)
- To express ideas more abstractly (বিমূর্তভাবে)
- To create concise, academic-style sentences
Example:
- Verb: The committee decided to close the school.
- Nominalized: The committee made a decision to close the school.
➡️ কমিটি স্কুল বন্ধ করার সিদ্ধান্ত নিল।
3. Common Patterns of Nominalization
a) Verb → Noun
- decide → decision (সিদ্ধান্ত)
- move → movement (আন্দোলন/চলন)
- fail → failure (ব্যর্থতা)
- approve → approval (অনুমোদন)
b) Adjective → Noun
- strong → strength (শক্তি)
- responsible → responsibility (দায়িত্ব)
- different → difference (পার্থক্য)
- possible → possibility (সম্ভাবনা)
c) Clause → Noun Phrase
- People opposed that the rule was unfair.
- Nominalized: People opposed the unfairness of the rule.
➡️ মানুষ নিয়মটির অন্যায্যতার প্রতিবাদ করেছে।
4. Examples with Bangla
- Verb → Noun
- They decided to improve the system.
➡️ They made a decision to improve the system.
(তারা সিস্টেম উন্নতির সিদ্ধান্ত নিল।)
- Adjective → Noun
- The policy is different from last year.
➡️ There is a difference between this year’s and last year’s policy.
(এই বছরের নীতি আর গত বছরের নীতির মধ্যে একটি পার্থক্য আছে।)
- Clause → Noun Phrase
- People believe that the earth is warming.
➡️ People believe in global warming.
(মানুষ বিশ্ব উষ্ণায়ন এ বিশ্বাস করে।)
5. Nominalization in Academic Writing
- Verb style (less formal):
Scientists analyzed the data carefully. - Nominalized style (formal):
A careful analysis of the data was conducted by scientists.
➡️ ডেটার একটি সতর্ক বিশ্লেষণ বিজ্ঞানীরা করেছেন।
6. Practice (Translate)
- সরকার কর বাড়িয়েছে।
👉 The government increased taxes.
👉 The government made an increase in taxes. - সে দায়িত্বশীল।
👉 He is responsible.
👉 He has a strong sense of responsibility. - শিক্ষক শিক্ষার্থীদের ব্যর্থতার জন্য চিন্তিত।
👉 The teacher is worried because students failed.
👉 The teacher is worried about students’ failure.
