Lesson: Advanced Conditionals (Mixed Conditionals)

1. What are Mixed Conditionals?

👉 Mixed Conditionals are conditional sentences where the time in the “if-clause” and the time in the main clause are different.
➡️ বাংলায়: Mixed Conditional হলো সেই শর্তবাক্য যেখানে If-clause এবং Main clause—এর সময় আলাদা হয়।

2. Structure & Types

a) Present result of a past condition

(অতীতে কিছু ঘটেনি → বর্তমানে প্রভাব)

Form: If + Past Perfect, … would + base verb.

• If I had studied harder, I would have a better job now.
  ➡️ যদি আমি বেশি পড়াশোনা করতাম, এখন আমার ভালো চাকরি থাকত।

b) Past result of a present/unreal condition

(বর্তমানে অবাস্তব অবস্থা → অতীতে ফলাফল)

Form: If + Simple Past, … would have + past participle.

• If she were taller, she would have joined the basketball team.
  ➡️ যদি সে লম্বা হতো, তবে সে বাস্কেটবল দলে যোগ দিত।

3. Comparison with Standard Conditionals

• 3rd Conditional (Past–Past):
  If I had studied, I would have passed.
  (অতীতে শর্ত → অতীতে ফলাফল)
• Mixed Conditional (Past–Present):
  If I had studied, I would be successful now.
  (অতীতে শর্ত → বর্তমানে ফলাফল)

4. Examples with Bangla

1. If you had saved money, you wouldn’t be poor now.
   ➡️ তুমি যদি টাকা জমাতে, তবে এখন গরিব হতে না।
2. If I were more confident, I would have spoken in the meeting yesterday.
   ➡️ আমি যদি বেশি আত্মবিশ্বাসী হতাম, তবে গতকাল মিটিংয়ে কথা বলতাম।
3. If they had listened to me, they wouldn’t be in trouble now.
   ➡️ তারা যদি আমার কথা শুনত, তবে এখন সমস্যায় পড়ত না।

Common with mixed conditionals:

• If I had…, I would now…
• If I were…, I would have…
• If you had…, you wouldn’t now…

6. Practice (Translate)

1. যদি আমি বিদেশে পড়াশোনা করতাম, এখন আমার ভালো ক্যারিয়ার থাকত।
   👉 If I had studied abroad, I would have a better career now.
2. যদি সে সময়মতো আসত, আমরা পার্টি মিস করতাম না।
   👉 If he had come on time, we wouldn’t be missing the party now.
3. আমি যদি বেশি ধনী হতাম, তবে আমি গতকাল সেই গাড়ি কিনতাম।
   👉 If I were richer, I would have bought that car yesterday.
