Complex Sentence

đŸ”ĩ 1. What is a Complex Sentence?

A complex sentence =
👉 1 independent clause (main idea)
👉 + 1 or more dependent clauses (extra information)

Example:

  • I will go outside because the weather is nice.

✔ “I will go outside” = complete sentence
✔ “because the weather is nice” = not complete → depends on main clause

đŸ”ĩ 2. Types of Dependent Clauses

There are 3 main types you MUST master for IELTS:

đŸŸĸ A. Adverb Clauses (Most important)

They answer:
👉 why, when, how, condition, contrast

Common words:

  • because, although, if, when, while, since, unless, before, after

Examples:

  • I stayed home because it was raining. (reason)
  • Although I was tired, I studied. (contrast)
  • I will call you when I arrive. (time)
  • If you work hard, you will succeed. (condition)

đŸŸĸ B. Relative Clauses (who, which, that)

Used to give extra information about a noun

Examples:

  • The student who studies hard will pass.
  • The book that I bought is interesting.
  • The city where I live is beautiful.

👉 IELTS tip: This increases your grammar score (band 7+)

đŸŸĸ C. Noun Clauses

Used as:
👉 subject or object in a sentence

Examples:

  • I believe that he is honest.
  • What she said is true.
  • I don’t know where he lives.

đŸ”ĩ 3. Sentence Structure Patterns

You must know these 3 patterns:

✔ Pattern 1:

👉 Dependent clause + , + Independent clause

  • Although I was tired, I continued working.

✔ Pattern 2:

👉 Independent clause + dependent clause

  • I continued working although I was tired.

✔ Pattern 3:

👉 Embedded clause (inside sentence)

  • The man who is talking is my teacher.

đŸ”ĩ 4. Common Mistakes (Bangladeshi students âš ī¸)

❌ Wrong:

  • Because I was tired. (incomplete sentence)

✔ Correct:

  • I stayed home because I was tired.

❌ Wrong:

  • Although he is poor but he is happy.

✔ Correct:

  • Although he is poor, he is happy.
    OR
  • He is poor, but he is happy.

❌ Wrong:

  • He said me that he will come.

✔ Correct:

  • He told me that he would come.

đŸ”ĩ 5. IELTS Band 7–8 Strategy

To get high score:

✅ Use different clause types
✅ Mix simple + complex sentences
✅ Avoid repeating “because” too much
✅ Use:

  • although / whereas / while / even though / despite

đŸ”ĩ 6. Advanced Examples (Band 7+)

  • Although many students feel nervous about IELTS, they can improve significantly if they practice regularly.
  • People who invest time in learning English often achieve better career opportunities.
  • What I find most difficult is managing time during the exam.
