Intermediate English Course: Linking Words & Connectors (because, however, although)

Lesson Objectives (ক্লাসের লক্ষ্য)

  1. Linking words ও connectors কী এবং কেন ব্যবহার হয় তা বোঝা।
  2. বাক্য ও প্যারাগ্রাফে কারণ, বিপরীত, শর্ত ইত্যাদি সম্পর্ক প্রকাশ করা শেখা।
  3. দৈনন্দিন বাক্য ও সংলাপে Linking Words ব্যবহার অনুশীলন করা।

1. Linking Words According to Function (ফাংশন অনুযায়ী)

a) Reason / Cause (কারণ / কারণ দেখানো)

Connector Example Bangla Meaning
because I stayed at home because it was raining. আমি ঘরে থাকলাম কারণ বৃষ্টি হচ্ছিল।
since Since you are here, let’s start the meeting. যেহেতু তুমি এখানে আছ, চল মিটিং শুরু করি।
as As it was late, we went home. যেহেতু দেরি হয়ে গেছে, আমরা বাড়ি চলে গেলাম।

b) Contrast / Opposite (বিপরীত / তবে)

Connector Example Bangla Meaning
however I wanted to go; however, it was raining. আমি যেতে চেয়েছিলাম; তবে বৃষ্টি হচ্ছিল।
although / though Although he is rich, he is humble. যদিও সে ধনী, সে বিনয়ী।
but I like tea, but I don’t drink it often. আমি চা পছন্দ করি, কিন্তু প্রায়ই খাই না।
yet He is young, yet very responsible. সে ছোট, তবুও খুব দায়িত্বশীল।

c) Addition / Also (যোগ / আরও)

Connector Example Bangla Meaning
and I like apples and oranges. আমি আপেল এবং কমলা পছন্দ করি।
moreover / in addition She is smart; moreover, she is hardworking. সে বুদ্ধিমান; উপরন্তু, সে পরিশ্রমী।
as well as He speaks French as well as English. সে ফ্রেঞ্চ এবং ইংরেজি উভয় ভাষায় কথা বলতে পারে।

d) Result / Consequence (ফল / পরিণতি)

Connector Example Bangla Meaning
so It was raining, so we stayed inside. বৃষ্টি হচ্ছিল, তাই আমরা ভিতরে থাকলাম।
therefore He was tired; therefore, he went to bed early. সে ক্লান্ত ছিল; অতএব, সে আগে ঘুমাতে গেল।
thus She didn’t study; thus, she failed the exam. সে পড়াশোনা করেনি; তাই সে পরীক্ষায় ফেল করেছে।

e) Time / Sequence (সময় / ক্রম)

Connector Example Bangla Meaning
when Call me when you arrive. তুমি পৌঁছালে আমাকে কল করো।
before Wash your hands before eating. খাওয়ার আগে হাত ধোও।
after I took a shower after breakfast. আমি নাশতার পরে গোসল করেছি।
while He was reading while I was cooking. আমি রান্না করছিলাম, সে পড়ছিল।
until / till Wait here until I come. আমি আসা পর্যন্ত এখানে অপেক্ষা কর।

2. Practice Sentences (চর্চার বাক্য)

  1. I stayed at home because I was sick.
  2. She is rich; however, she is very humble.
  3. I like coffee as well as tea.
  4. It was raining, so we canceled the trip.
  5. Call me when you reach home.

3. Exercise (চর্চা)

  1. Fill in the blanks with the correct linking word:
  • He is tired, ___ he is happy. (although / because / so)
  • I was late, ___ I missed the bus. (so / and / yet)
  • She is smart ___ hardworking. (as well as / but / because)
  • I can’t go out ___ it is raining. (because / although / so)
  • Finish your homework ___ you watch TV. (before / while / after)
  1. Combine the sentences using appropriate connectors:
  • I like apples. I like oranges.
  • He was tired. He continued working.
  • She didn’t study. She passed the exam.
  • It started raining. We ran inside.
  1. Translate into Bangla:
  • “Although he was tired, he continued working.”
  • “She is smart as well as kind.”
  • “It was raining, so we stayed indoors.”
