🧠 What are Conditionals?

They are “if sentences”:

If something happens → something else happens


🟢 1. ZERO CONDITIONAL (Facts / Truth)

📌 Structure:

If + present simple, present simple

📌 Use:

  • General truths
  • Scientific facts

✅ Examples:

  • If you heat water, it boils.
  • If people eat too much, they gain weight.

👉 IELTS use: general statements in Writing Task 2


🟡 2. FIRST CONDITIONAL (Real Future)

📌 Structure:

If + present simple, will + verb

📌 Use:

  • Real future possibility

✅ Examples:

  • If I study, I will pass.
  • If it rains, we will stay home.

👉 IELTS use: predictions, solutions


🔵 3. SECOND CONDITIONAL (Unreal / Imaginary)

📌 Structure:

If + past simple, would + verb

📌 Use:

  • Unreal present/future
  • Imaginary situations

✅ Examples:

  • If I were rich, I would travel the world.
  • If I had more time, I would learn English better.

🟣 4. THIRD CONDITIONAL (Past Regret)

📌 Structure:

If + had + past participle, would have + past participle

📌 Use:

  • Past situations (regret / impossible)

✅ Examples:

  • If I had studied, I would have passed.
  • If he had worked hard, he would have succeeded.

👉 IELTS use: showing deeper thinking


🔥 Common Mistakes (Very Important)

❌ Wrong:

  • If I will study, I will pass.
    ✔ If I study, I will pass.

❌ Wrong:

  • If I was rich, I will buy a car.
    ✔ If I were rich, I would buy a car.

❌ Wrong:

  • If I studied, I will pass.
    ✔ If I studied, I would pass.

👉 Mix conditionals in your writing:

Example (Band 7+):

  • If governments invest more in education, students will benefit.
  • If people were more aware, pollution would decrease.
  • If stricter laws had been implemented, accidents would have been reduced.
